The Privacy Commissioner’s Office conducted inquiries at six different locations associated with the Worldcoin project. The investigation focuses on potential violations of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, particularly concerning the collection and processing of sensitive personal data.
Privacy Commissioner Urges Vigilance
The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Ada Chung Lai-ling, issued a cautionary statement advising citizens to be vigilant when participating in the Worldcoin project. She emphasized the importance of safeguarding sensitive personal data, especially biometric data collected through methods like iris scanning.
Citizens were urged to consider factors such as legality, purpose, usage, disclosure, retention, and security measures before providing biometric data.
Past Legal Troubles and Backlash
Worldcoin has faced criticism since its testing phase, particularly in developing economies. In September, the Kenyan government expressed concerns about data protection and initiated investigations into the project.
