Over 1,800 papyrus scrolls survived the eruption of Mount Vesuvius 2,000 years ago in Herculaneum, Italy. Archaeologists believe these scrolls hold valuable information, but previous attempts to read them have failed. The Vesuvius Challenge was created to find a solution to this problem.
The winners of the 2023 challenge used artificial intelligence (AI), nondestructive CT scans, and specialized techniques to scan and translate a small portion of one scroll. The team was led by Luke Farritor, a student who developed a machine learning algorithm capable of deciphering the sealed scrolls.
