Verifying Identities of Esports Players with Worldcoin’s World ID

Community Gaming Partners with Worldcoin for Identity Verification

Community Gaming, a crypto-powered esports tournament platform, has joined forces with Worldcoin contributor Tools for Humanity to integrate World ID into its infrastructure. This integration allows tournament creators to optionally require players to verify their identity before participating in competitions.

About Worldcoin and World ID

Worldcoin is a blockchain-based digital identity project that enables individuals to “prove their personhood.” The project uses a device called the “Orb” to scan users’ irises. Verified users receive a World ID that can be used to verify their identity across various games and apps.

Optional Verification for Tournament Organizers

The integration of World ID into Community Gaming’s platform is entirely optional for tournament organizers. However, it provides a way to verify users who may be participating from different locations. Events utilizing this feature will require players to verify their World ID before registering, and verified users will have a badge on their account pages.

Varying Levels of Security

Community Gaming CEO Chris Gonsalves clarified that World ID verification does not require the use of the Orb. Users can simply verify themselves using a mobile device. App creators have multiple security options available, including iris scanning with the Orb or alternative methods.

Preventing Manipulation in Tournaments

The implementation of World ID functionality addresses concerns about users creating multiple accounts in online esports events to gain an unfair advantage. By verifying participants’ identities, Community Gaming aims to foster trust and fairness in online event participation.

Rollout and Future Plans

The rollout of World ID integration will begin in Latin America, specifically targeting Argentina, Peru, and Brazil. Verified tournaments will be hosted for games such as PUBG, Marvel Snap, Axie Infinity, and Free Fire. Community Gaming also plans to organize in-person events in Latin America to showcase Worldcoin and World ID, although the details are still being finalized.

Worldcoin’s Significance and Challenges

Worldcoin, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is seen as a solution to verify human identities amidst the proliferation of AI-generated misinformation. However, the project has faced regulatory scrutiny and investigations in France and Germany.

Hot Take: Promoting Trust and Fairness in Esports

By integrating World ID verification into its platform, Community Gaming takes a significant step towards addressing the challenge of confirming participants’ identities in online esports events. This move promotes greater trust and solidifies the core dynamic of esports participation. With the support of esports communities, Community Gaming aims to foster trust and fairness while showcasing Worldcoin’s potential for identity verification.
