Industry Groups Criticize US Energy Department’s Data Collection
Two blockchain industry groups have criticized the US Energy Department’s mandatory data collection from crypto mining operators, calling it a “politically motivated campaign.” Texas Blockchain Council president Lee Bratcher and Chamber of Digital Commerce CEO Perianne Boring issued a statement claiming that the move would impact all industries reliant on data centers.
EIA Accused of Abusing Authority
The industry groups also accused the Energy Information Administration (EIA) of abusing its authority instead of improving electricity infrastructure. They argued that the EIA’s decision to collect electricity consumption data from crypto miners was an attempt to limit or eliminate US Bitcoin miners.
The EIA responded to these claims by stating that they have been conducting surveys with energy producers and are willing to work with companies in the cryptocurrency industry.
Flexibility of Bitcoin Miners’ Operations
The industry groups highlighted the ability of Bitcoin miners to adjust their power usage according to grid conditions, describing their operations as the most flexible and responsive electrical loads in the nation.
An Attack on American Businesses?
The groups also viewed this move as an attack on legitimate American businesses, suggesting that the Biden Administration is making it too difficult for Bitcoin miners to operate in the US.
