The Loss of a JPMorgan Chase Customer’s Life Savings Leads to Apple Removing Scam Apps
Recently, a JPMorgan Chase customer named Avalon Grimes fell victim to a scam that resulted in the draining of her life savings. The scammer called her using a phone number that appeared to be from the bank, convincing her to transfer her money to another account. This was made possible through a technique called spoofing, which allows scammers to mimic legitimate phone numbers. CBS New York discovered that there are apps available on the App Store that enable users to easily spoof numbers.
Apple claims to have advanced systems in place to prevent fraudulent apps and promptly removed two unnamed apps highlighted by CBS New York. These apps were taken down because they violated Apple’s policies against anonymous or prank call apps. However, despite the ordeal, JPMorgan Chase will not be reimbursing Grimes as she unknowingly approved the fraudulent transaction.
Chase is currently working with the bank used by the scammer in an attempt to recover the funds, but it is unlikely that Grimes will be able to retrieve her money. As a result, she is back at square one in her efforts to save for a new home.
