Privacy-focused Project Nym Incorporates Mixnet Technology into Zcash Network
Privacy-focused project Nym is collaborating with Zcash development organization Electric Coin Company to integrate its mixnet technology into the Zcash network. The goal is to enhance privacy protections by addressing metadata leakage for users.
Nym’s Mixnet Embedded in Zcash Light Client Libraries
Nym is embedding its mixnet within the Zcash light client libraries developed by Electric Coin Company. This allows developers of Zcash wallets to implement the mixnet’s privacy features. Nym received a $150,000 community grant from Zcash for this integration process.
Addressing Network-level Privacy
Zcash CEO Josh Swihart expressed satisfaction with the integration, stating that network-level privacy has been missing from Zcash since its inception. Nym’s mixnet aims to protect user data from potential surveillance by mitigating metadata leaks.
Mitigating Metadata Leaks in Zcash Transactions
Zcash is known for its optional privacy features, but Nym notes that metadata associated with user transactions can still be traced. Nym’s mixnet solution offers a more comprehensive approach to safeguarding metadata privacy compared to traditional tools like VPNs and Tor.
Encrypting Metadata Using Mixnet Technology
Nym’s mixnet encrypts user-generated data into packets of identical size and routes them through a network of mix nodes at randomized intervals. This process incorporates dummy traffic to further obfuscate user data and make it difficult to identify metadata patterns.
Aligning with Other Cryptocurrency Initiatives
Several cryptocurrency initiatives, including Monero, Aztec, and Near, have integrated Nym’s mixnet technology. This aligns Zcash with these privacy-focused projects.
Regulatory Challenges and Nym’s VPN-like Product
Privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Monero and Zcash have faced potential delisting threats from centralized exchanges due to regulatory pressures. However, Nym’s metadata encryption through its VPN-like product is not subject to the same challenges. Nym Technologies raised $13 million in funding and has a valuation of $270 million.
