Bitcoin Ransomware Attackers Leak Sensitive Data of Venezuelan Mobile Carrier Digitel Customers

A group of hackers known as MedusaBlog reportedly infiltrated the networks of Venezuelan mobile carrier Digitel on February 2 and gained control of company data. They demanded a ransom of $5 million worth of Bitcoin from Digitel within a week. The attackers have now leaked “sensitive data” belonging to millions of Digitel customers onto the internet. The leaked data includes employee lists, identification documents, financial documents, reports, invoices, contracts, subscriber agreements, and personal data of citizens. IT experts warn that more attacks may be forthcoming from this hacking group. Previously, the same group released over 1.5 terabytes worth of data from Argentina’s markets regulator in October 2023.

Implications for Digitel Customers

IT journalist Fran Monroy Moret has called the data leak a “disaster,” suggesting that the stolen information could include IDs, fingerprints, photographs, names, and more. However, customers are advised to remain calm and wait for further developments. It is recommended that Digitel users change their passwords and take measures to safeguard their emails and accounts on different platforms.

Venezuela’s Crypto Crackdown

Venezuela was once a pro-crypto nation but executed a major crackdown on cryptocurrencies last year. This included shutting down its state-run oil-backed cryptocurrency Petro on January 15. The recent Bitcoin ransomware attack on Digitel highlights ongoing cybersecurity challenges faced by businesses and individuals in the country.
