Microsoft to Expand Availability of Exclusive Xbox Games to PlayStation and Nintendo Platforms

Microsoft to Bring Xbox Games to Competing Consoles

In an official podcast, Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed that Microsoft will be releasing four previously exclusive Xbox games on competing consoles. While the titles have not been officially announced, sources familiar with Xbox’s plans suggest that the games will be Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded. However, it’s important to note that this move does not mean Microsoft will release all of its typically exclusive games on other consoles.

The purpose of this experiment is to spread original franchises to more platforms and attract new players. Spencer believes that exclusive games will become a smaller part of the industry in the future. Despite this announcement, there is no indication that Microsoft will stop producing Xbox hardware. In fact, leaked information suggests that a new console platform is in the works for 2028.

No Expansion of Xbox Game Pass to Competing Consoles

Contrary to previous comments from Xbox Chief Financial Officer Tim Stuart, Microsoft clarified that Xbox Game Pass will not be expanded to rival consoles. While the subscription service is available on smartphones, tablets, and other devices, it will not be offered on competing game consoles.

Additionally, Microsoft announced that games published by Activision Blizzard will start coming to Xbox Game Pass next month. The release of Diablo IV on March 28 marks the beginning of this effort.

Hot Take: Expanding Gaming Access and Exclusivity

Microsoft’s decision to bring some previously exclusive Xbox games to competing consoles demonstrates a shift towards expanding gaming access. By spreading original franchises across different platforms, Microsoft aims to attract more players and adapt to changing industry trends. However, this move does not indicate a complete abandonment of exclusivity or a halt in hardware production. Instead, it serves as an experiment to gauge the future of exclusive games. While Xbox Game Pass will not be expanded to rival consoles, the inclusion of Activision Blizzard games in the service showcases Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to enhance the gaming experience for its users.
