Myanmar-based Scammers Accumulate $100 Million in Crypto Through Romance Scams
A recent report by Chainalysis has revealed that a criminal gang based in Myanmar has managed to amass $100 million worth of cryptocurrency over the past two years. The gang operates through romance scams, where victims are tricked into fake relationships and convinced to invest their money in crypto. These scams are centered around pig butchering schemes and are carried out by gangs operating from the KK Park compound in Myawaddy.
The Horrific Conditions Faced by Victims
The victims of these scams, who are often trafficked workers, endure brutal working conditions and coercive tactics to meet scamming quotas. They are forced to work long hours and face physical abuse if they fail to contact potential scam victims or meet their quotas. In some cases, the gangs even withhold food from them. Eric Heintz, a global analyst at the Global Fusion Center of the International Justice Mission, highlights the horrible conditions these victims face.
“The conditions these people face are horrible. They’re forced to work 12 or more hours per day, and if they don’t meet quotas on contacting potential scam victims, the gangs beat them, torture them, and even withhold food.”

The Profitability of Romance Scams
Chainalysis’s investigation into ransom addresses associated with pig butchering gangs has uncovered significant amounts of cryptocurrency. This highlights the profitability of these illicit activities and emphasizes the need for urgent action to combat romance scams.
Law Enforcement Efforts
In November 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) collaborated with Tether to seize $9 million worth of USDT from a criminal organization involved in romance scams. The scams targeted unsuspecting American investors, and the assets seized rightfully belonged to over 70 victims. Tether has also blacklisted nearly 1,300 crypto wallets associated with illicit activity.

The Chainalysis report sheds light on the alarming rise of romance scams orchestrated by Myanmar-based criminal gangs. The exploitation of victims through fake relationships and coerced investments in crypto has resulted in an accumulation of $100 million worth of cryptocurrency.
