Regulating P2P Cryptocurrency Purchases in Thailand

Thailand’s state authorities are taking action to regulate peer-to-peer (P2P) cryptocurrency transactions to combat online fraud. A meeting led by Prasert Jantararuangthong, the minister for digital economy and society, gathered key representatives from various departments, including the Thai SEC, Bank of Thailand, Royal Thai Police, and Defense Ministry.

  • The minister emphasized the need to adjust existing regulations to supervise P2P crypto transactions.

  • The focus on regulating P2P channels is part of a comprehensive strategy to tackle online fraud effectively.

Challenges with P2P Transactions in Thailand

Thailand has experienced numerous cases of fraud perpetrated through P2P transactions, where scammers masquerade as legitimate businesses to deceive individuals. To address this issue:

  • Binance exchange played a crucial role in assisting Thai authorities in uncovering and apprehending perpetrators involved in significant cryptocurrency scams.
  • One notable success involved Binance aiding in identifying criminals behind a massive pig butchering scam, resulting in the seizure of crypto assets worth 10 billion Thai Baht ($277 million).

Government’s Response to Online Fraud

In response to the escalating rates of online fraud, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin issued a directive on April 1 for state agencies to demonstrate tangible progress in combatting online fraud within a 30-day period. Subsequent actions taken include:

  • Parties involved in the meeting were tasked with promptly reporting any pertinent information on crypto-related scams to the AOC.
  • The central bank and Thai Bankers’ Association were expected to take swift action following the receipt of these reports.
  • The Royal Thai Police and Defense Ministry were assigned the responsibility of dismantling illegal telecommunications signal towers and cracking down on call center syndicates with the help of community cooperation.
