Understanding Zero Flows in Bitcoin ETFs
When analyzing the performance of new spot Bitcoin ETFs, it was observed on April 16 that four of these ETFs experienced zero flows. This includes Bitwise, Invesco Galaxy, WisdomTree, and Hashdex. Additionally, Grayscale’s GBTC and ARK 21Shares’ ARKB saw outflows of $79.4 million and $12.9 million, respectively. Despite these numbers, Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart reassured investors that this is a common occurrence in the ETF market.
Why Zero Flows Are Not Alarming
Seyffart explained that it is typical for most ETFs to have zero flows on a daily basis. In fact, on April 15, out of the 3,500 ETFs in the US, 2,903 reported zero flows. Even the majority of recently launched spot Bitcoin ETFs, such as Fidelity, had zero flows on the same day. This phenomenon occurs because shares are only created or destroyed in specific units when there is a significant gap between supply and demand.
- Creation units are utilized for producing or redeeming ETF shares.
- These units are blocks of shares ranging from 5,000 to 50,000.
- A creation or redemption event only happens when there is a substantial mismatch in supply and demand.
Third Consecutive Day of Outflows
Seyffart further elaborated that market makers handle the trading of shares similarly to stocks unless there is a significant mismatch that surpasses a creation unit. Consequently, large discrepancies result in notable inflows or outflows of the underlying asset, while smaller differences lead to zero flows. On April 16, there was a net outflow of $58 million from spot Bitcoin ETFs, marking the third consecutive day of outflows. Despite a slight recovery in BTC price, reaching $64,000 briefly, it later declined in the Asian trading session.
Hot Take: Keeping Perspective on ETF Flows
As an investor in the cryptocurrency market, it’s crucial to understand the nuances of ETF flows and not be alarmed by zero flow days. These occurrences are part of the normal functioning of ETFs and do not necessarily indicate a negative trend in the market. By staying informed and focusing on long-term investment strategies, you can navigate through fluctuations in ETF flows and make well-informed decisions regarding your crypto investments.
