Changpeng Zhao (CZ), Former Binance CEO, Begins Jail Term
Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the former CEO of Binance, has started his four-month jail term in a low-security federal prison in Lompoc, California. This news was confirmed by CZ’s defense team at Latham & Watkins to CNBC. After pleading guilty to money laundering violations on April 30, CZ was out on bail until late May, when he began serving his sentence. Despite the federal prosecutors seeking three years, CZ will only serve four months, a sentence that is less severe than originally anticipated.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) had been investigating Binance and CZ for several years. The case culminated in November 2023, with CZ admitting guilt to breaching the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) by not implementing an effective anti-money laundering program at Binance. On the Binance front, the company pleaded guilty to various offenses, including conspiracy to violate the BSA and other regulatory breaches.
“I’m sorry,” CZ told U.S. District Judge Richard Jones before receiving his sentence. “I believe the first step of taking responsibility is fully recognizing the mistakes. Here I failed to implement an adequate anti-money laundering program. … I realize now the seriousness of that mistake.”
Although CZ resigned as CEO as part of a settlement with the U.S. government, he remains the owner of an estimated 90% stake in Binance.

Prosecutors accused CZ’s Binance exchange of facilitating money laundering, resulting in illicit transactions involving Americans and sanctioned nations. Binance was fined $4.3 billion, with CZ himself paying a $50 million fine. Despite his current confinement, CZ intends to reenter the crypto world post-release, holding onto his assets and pursuing passive investing.
The blockchain community has shown support for CZ during this trying time, viewing his incarceration as a protective measure for Binance.
Compared to his counterpart at FTX, CZ’s situation is less severe, with Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX, facing a 25-year prison term in the U.S. after being found guilty on multiple criminal counts relating to securities fraud.

- Ryan Salame, a former FTX executive, received a 7.5-year prison sentence and must pay back over $11 million in confiscation money and compensation.
- Bankman-Fried’s ex-girlfriend, Caroline Ellison, cooperated with prosecutors against him.
- Bankman-Fried, unlike CZ, did not reach a plea deal with the US government.
- Bankman-Fried was ordered to forfeit $11 billion as part of his sentencing.
As CZ prepares to return to the crypto industry after his jail time, the contrast between his situation and that of others in the industry serves as a testament to the changing regulatory landscape in the cryptocurrency space.
