Expanding and Improving the Bitcoin Ecosystem
In a keynote address at Bitcoin Unleashed in London, Casa CTO Jameson Lopp emphasized the importance of experimentation and sidechains in order to expand and improve the Bitcoin ecosystem. Lopp believes that sidechains and Layer 2 solutions are crucial for enabling permissionless innovation. He acknowledged that ossification, or becoming rigid and unchanging, is inevitable in networks, including Bitcoin. Therefore, he advocated for the development of related but different protocols to Bitcoin, allowing for innovation without constantly having to change the base protocol.
Lopp mentioned existing sidechain projects like Blockstream’s Liquid Network and Rootstock, but noted that their adoption has stalled possibly because they are based around federations. He also highlighted several recent sidechain proposals such as drivechains, spiderchain, and BitVM. These proposals aim to provide new ways to build layers on top of Bitcoin, with BitVM specifically attempting to introduce capabilities similar to Ethereum.
The Importance of Allowing New Functionality
Lopp stressed the need for continuous experimentation and the introduction of new functionality. He believes that allowing new ideas and protocols to flourish can have a significant multiplier effect on what can be achieved on these additional layers. Lopp clarified that he does not endorse any specific idea but wants all these proposals to thrive. He emphasized the importance of building, learning from failures, and evolving in order to make progress before ossification occurs.
