Chinese and Lao nationals arrested in 2.7 billion Baht cryptocurrency fraud
Five individuals, including four Chinese nationals and one Lao citizen, have been detained for their involvement in a cryptocurrency scam that resulted in a loss of approximately 2.7 billion Baht (around $76 million), according to the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) of Thailand. The CCIB stated that over 3,280 individuals have been victimized by this fraudulent scheme since November 2022. The victims were lured by strangers or foreigners who encouraged them to invest using foreign mobile applications and online platforms, promising significant returns. Some victims went to extremes, using their life savings or borrowing against their properties to invest in the scam. The investigation revealed connections between the suspects and other fake platforms, leading to charges of transnational crime, public fraud, false information dissemination, and money laundering.
Cracking down on cryptocurrency fraud
Thailand continues to combat illicit activities in the cryptocurrency industry. In an effort to address the rise in crypto-related scams and misleading advertisements on Facebook, the country warned of a potential shutdown. The Minister of Digital Economy and Society pledged to take action against these fraudulent activities and plans to present their findings in Thai court. Chainanalysis, in a report from February, warned users about the persistence of crypto scams, emphasizing that although scam revenues have decreased, successful scams like Hyperverse still cause significant losses to users.
