The Return of the Atari Club: New Jackets for NFT Holders

Retro game publisher Atari is launching a new version of its iconic Atari Club member jackets. These navy blue zip-up jackets, inspired by the originals from the 1980s, will be available for purchase from Thursday until December 1. However, they will only be accessible to holders of Atari’s ARC NFTs. Compared to the original jackets, the new versions are made of a thicker material, and the Atari logo is now embroidered onto the coats instead of being a removable patch. The collaboration with Members Only, a popular fashion brand in the 1980s, adds to the nostalgic appeal.

Atari’s website states that owners of ARC NFTs will gain early access to merch, voting privileges, discounts, and presale access to the new member jackets. However, the jackets won’t be delivered until February or March of 2024. In the meantime, fans can purchase Atari patches from the publisher’s shop and attach them to their jackets when they arrive.

Atari’s Long-standing Involvement in Crypto

Atari has been exploring blockchain integrations for approximately six years. Tyler Drewitz, Atari X director, who oversees the company’s crypto-powered activations, acknowledges that entering the crypto space can be divisive due to its newness and pushback from traditional gamers. However, Atari is committed to redefining gaming through blockchain integrations. Drewitz believes that Web3 gaming will play a foundational role in future technology and sees it as an avenue for pushing boundaries.

Potential Future Plans

While Drewitz doesn’t rule out the possibility of offering blockchain games to NFT fans and jacket buyers in the future, he acknowledges that quick development timelines have resulted in low-quality games. Atari is exploring opportunities for Web3 player ownership, perks, and third-party integrations. Drewitz emphasizes the importance of enhancing experiences and making Web3 games more enjoyable rather than solely focused on earning potential. Atari aims to seamlessly integrate Web3 technology into their classic arcade titles and upcoming games.

Hot Take: Atari’s Commitment to Embracing Web3

Atari, a renowned name in the gaming industry since its founding in 1972, is embracing Web3 as a foundational element for future technology. The company’s exploration of blockchain integrations and collaboration with Members Only for the release of new jackets demonstrates its commitment to staying relevant and appealing to both nostalgic gamers and crypto enthusiasts. By leveraging NFTs and offering exclusive benefits to holders, Atari is tapping into the growing crypto market while preserving its legacy as a pop culture icon. As they continue their journey into Web3 gaming, Atari aims to strike a balance between innovation and maintaining the joy and fun that gaming brings.
