Cybersecurity Firm Issues Warning About Convincing Deepfake Video
Cybersecurity firm Cybertrace has issued a warning about a highly convincing deepfake video featuring Australian mining magnate Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest. The video, which has surfaced on social media platforms, shows Forrest promoting a fake cryptocurrency trading platform that promises high returns. It encourages users to sign up for a fraudulent platform called “Quantum AI” that Cybertrace says is associated with scams and financial fraud.
Scammers Show Sales Expertise in Deep Fake
Cybertrace CEO Dan Halpin commented that the scammers behind the deepfake video appear to possess sales expertise, making it more deceiving. The video’s length and repetitive nature contribute to its convincing nature. It manipulates Forrest’s behavior and body language using footage from a previous event. The altered version of Forrest guarantees substantial profits regardless of market conditions and urges viewers to sign up before it’s too late.
Increase in Deepfake Fraud
Cybertrace warns users to be extra vigilant due to the recent surge in deepfake fraud. Other notable Australian individuals, such as Gina Rinehart and Dick Smith, have also been targeted by scammers using deepfake videos. Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, has also warned his followers about the use of deepfake videos for cryptocurrency scams. Scammers continue to employ various methods to deceive individuals and steal their funds or tokens.
Hot Take: Protect Yourself Against Deepfake Scams
As deepfake technology advances, it becomes increasingly important to protect yourself against scams. Stay vigilant and skeptical of videos promoting unrealistic returns or urgent calls to action. Verify information from reliable sources and be cautious when sharing personal or financial details online. By staying informed and exercising caution, you can safeguard yourself and your loved ones against deepfake scams.
