An Australian Police Officer Accused of Stealing Bitcoin During an Investigation

An Australian cybercrime police officer, William Wheatley, has been accused of stealing 81.616 Bitcoin during a steroid trafficking investigation in Melbourne. Wheatley allegedly pocketed a Trezor hardware wallet containing the Bitcoins, which were worth about $450,000 at the time. He is also facing charges of dealing with property suspected to be the proceeds of crime and using information to dishonestly benefit himself.

Wheatley was first charged in December 2022 by the former Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity. The charges stem from his involvement in a raid in 2019 as part of Operation Viridian. During the raid, large quantities of “steroid-type” substances were discovered, along with a Trezor crypto wallet.

Australian Federal Policeman Wheatley Denies Allegations

On Friday, Wheatley appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to all the accusations against him. He denied stealing cryptocurrencies from the Trezor wallet during the ring investigation and claimed that he did not misuse information obtained in his role as an investigation officer for personal gain. His lawyer argued that the case against him is circumstantial.

The County Court has scheduled the next hearing for March.
