Tens of Thousands of Bank of America Customers at Risk After Data Breach
A massive security failure has left tens of thousands of Bank of America customers vulnerable to identity fraud. The breach occurred due to a failure at Infosys McCamish Systems (IMS), an insurance business process solutions provider that the bank was using. According to a data breach notification filed in Maine, 57,028 Bank of America customers were exposed.
Personal Information Exposed
The breach involved data related to one of Bank of America’s deferred compensation plans, which contains critical personal information. The notification letter from IMS states that the accessed data may have included customers’ first and last names, addresses, business email addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and other account information.
Identity Theft Protection Offered
In response to the breach, IMS has offered affected customers a two-year complimentary identity theft protection program from Experian. The company has also recommended that Bank of America customers reset their passwords and monitor their accounts for any suspicious activity.
Enrollment in Identity Theft Protection Service
Bank of America will provide a complimentary two-year membership in an identity theft protection service provided by Experian IdentityWorksSM to affected customers. This service includes daily monitoring of credit reports from the three national credit reporting companies, internet surveillance, and resolution assistance for identity theft. Customers must enroll for activation, and the service will not automatically renew after the complimentary period ends.
