Beware of Misleading Game Download Scam, Warns Developers

A New Scam Targeting Web3 Games

A developer recently exposed a sophisticated game download scam that reveals the evolving tactics of fraudsters who are now targeting web3 games. The scam began with a direct message from a now-deactivated account, @ameliachicel, offering a job opportunity related to a Solidity position for a web3 game called MythIsland. The details of the game were hosted on a seemingly legitimate website, mythisland[.]io, which featured impressive graphics and functioning links. The website provided a detailed presentation of the game, including its in-game economy and NFT aspects. Additionally, the team members appeared to be doxxed, adding credibility to the project.

The Unfolding Scam

After the initial contact on Twitter, the conversation shifted to Telegram, where discussions about the game and job took place. The scammers introduced other ‘team members’ and asked the developer to download a game launcher to experience an alpha version of MythIsland. The cautious developer decided to run the launcher on a virtual Windows machine. Although the launcher appeared legitimate with professional graphics and user interface elements, an error message requesting an update to the .NET Framework appeared when attempting to register.

Upon reporting this issue, the scammers suggested trying another Windows machine. However, the same error occurred on an old ThinkPad. Realizing their plan was unlikely to succeed, the scammers erased all chats and blocked the developer. The developer wisely treated the compromised laptop as fully compromised and planned to wipe it clean.

Lessons Learned and Recommended Practices

This incident serves as a reminder of the warnings from blockchain security firms, urging caution when downloading files like executables and scripts. It is recommended to use a virtual machine or an expendable computer for such downloads or to opt for secure methods like Google Docs for document transfers. It is crucial to exercise vigilance and verify the legitimacy of websites, profiles, and job opportunities in the crypto space to protect yourself from scams.
