Binance CEO to plead guilty in US cases settlement
The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao will plead guilty to one felony charge as part of a settlement over criminal and civil cases with the exchange.
Binance’s violation of U.S. federal laws
Officials alleged the exchange allowed criminals involved in illicit activities to move “stolen funds” through the exchange, pretending to comply with U.S. federal laws by offering paths for certain users to access Binance despite their ties to illicit funds.
Heavy penalties to be paid
Binance would pay more than $3.4 billion in penalties to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and roughly $1 billion to the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control as part of the settlement.
Binance’s response and changes in leadership
Following the settlement, Binance said it was “pleased” to have reached the resolution with U.S. authorities and that CZ had stepped down as CEO. The global head of regional markets, Richard Teng, will assume the position.
