Binance Executives Detained in Nigeria Amid Government Investigation
Two Binance executives, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, are reportedly being held against their will in Abuja, Nigeria, according to a Wired report. Nigerian authorities have seized their passports, and the executives are unaware of any criminal charges against them.
The detention occurred during a visit to Abuja in late February, which was aimed at resolving a dispute between Nigeria and Binance regarding the government’s order to block access to the exchange. After a meeting with Nigerian officials, Gambaryan and Anjarwalla were moved to a property controlled by Nigeria’s National Security Agency.
Representatives from the US State Department and UK Foreign Office have visited the detained executives. Binance is cooperating with Nigerian authorities but has not disclosed the reasons behind their detention.
Gambaryan’s wife expressed frustration over the lack of information provided by Nigerian authorities. She said, “There’s no definite answer for anything: how he’s doing, what’s going to happen to him, when he’s coming back. And not knowing that is killing me.”
