No Internet? No Problem: Offline Lightning Payments using Mesh Networks
Researchers from Florida International University have explored the possibility of sending Bitcoin payments over the Lightning Network without internet access. They used local “mesh networks” to build a local Lightning Network called LNMesh, connecting nodes directly via Bluetooth and WiFi. The researchers found that offline Lightning payments should be feasible under the right circumstances. Their experiments showed that no changes need to be made to the existing Lightning protocol or code in order to enable offline payments. They successfully sent Lightning payments back and forth between nodes connected through WiFi and Bluetooth. The researchers have open sourced their code and results for those interested in replicating the experiment.
