Bitcoin Dominance Surges to 54% in the Cryptocurrency Market

The latest data reveals that bitcoin’s dominance in the cryptocurrency market has experienced a significant surge, reaching levels not seen since February 2021. Currently, bitcoin (BTC) accounts for approximately 54% of the total market value, while ethereum (ETH) trails behind at just above 17%.

Bitcoin’s Hegemony Rises From 40.2% to 54%

Over the past year, bitcoin’s dominance has witnessed a remarkable increase from 40.2% in October 2022 to the current level of 54% in October 2023. Insights from Tradingview on October 24, 2023, highlight fluctuations in bitcoin’s dominance, ranging from 53.44% to 54.11%.

Tradingview calculates bitcoin’s dominance by comparing its value against the combined value of the top 125 cryptocurrencies. This rise in BTC’s dominance marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time it has reached this level in over two years and eight months.

Ethereum’s Decreasing Dominance

In contrast to bitcoin, ethereum’s dominance has been on a downward trajectory. While it held a dominant position of 21.24% in October 2021, it experienced a decline and reached a low of 15% by May 2022. As of now, ethereum’s dominance stands at around 17.6%, and it has been declining since April 2023.

Bitcoin and Ethereum Lead the Market

Bitcoin and ethereum continue to lead the cryptocurrency market, with other top ten cryptocurrencies paling in comparison. Together, they constitute around 71% of the total market value. Tether (USDT), the third-largest cryptocurrency, accounts for only 6.667% of the market, followed by BNB and XRP at 2.767% and 2.305%, respectively.

Excluding BTC and ETH, the top eight digital currencies make up 17.55% of the market. The current data shows that the top ten cryptocurrencies collectively represent a massive 88% of the total market.
