Echoes From the Past: 2023 Sees $958M in ‘Sleeping Bitcoins’ Rouse From Multi-Year Slumbers
In recent years, Bitcoin.com News has been closely monitoring the movement of dormant bitcoins. Notably, there have been instances where transactions have occurred from wallets that have been inactive since 2010. During 2020 and 2021, a whale consistently executed batches of 20 block rewards, each containing 1,000 BTC, multiple times.
However, such significant movements have become rare in recent times. Yet, last month, a dormant 2010 wallet suddenly came to life and transferred 1,005 BTC after more than a decade of inactivity. These dormant bitcoins, also known as “sleeping bitcoins,” are funds that have remained untouched in wallets for a long period.
What are Sleeping Bitcoins?
Think of sleeping bitcoins like old coins stored in a jar that haven’t been spent or moved for years. These bitcoins haven’t been transacted or sold, regardless of the fluctuation in BTC value. It’s possible that owners have lost access to these coins, forgotten about them, or are simply holding onto them as a long-term investment.
When these dormant coins are suddenly moved, it becomes evident to the public that the owner still has control over the assets and has chosen to either relocate or spend them. Most of these sleeping bitcoins remain untouched until they are noticed moving again.
