BitMEX and the Mission to Send Bitcoin to the Moon
Today marks the launch of the Vulcan rocket by United Launch Alliance (ULA) carrying Bitcoin on board. This unique initiative is a collaboration between BitMEX, Astrobotic, Bitcoin Magazine, and Oxcart Assembly.
The co-founder of BitMEX, Arthur Hayes, is spearheading this groundbreaking project to showcase the vast potential of the Bitcoin ecosystem beyond Earth. The physical transportation of Bitcoin involves engraving a public address and a private key onto a physical medium.
While the primary purpose of today’s lunar mission is not solely focused on Bitcoin, it represents one of the 201 payloads of the mission.
BitMEX’s Mission and Trading Competition
This initiative not only aims to land Bitcoin on the Moon but also marks the first successful Western lunar landing since NASA’s Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
You can follow the progress of the mission through a live broadcast on NASA TV. Enthusiasts and curious individuals can register to access the broadcast.
The forecasted landing date for Bitcoin on the lunar surface is February 2024, where it will be preserved for future generations. BitMEX encourages people to send personal messages and their satoshis to create a unique connection between Earth and space.
In addition to this initiative, BitMEX is hosting a trading competition with $100,000 and more at stake.
Arthur Hayes and the Proposal for a Bitcoin-Based Stablecoin
While the current project of sending Bitcoin to the Moon becomes a reality, Arthur Hayes’ proposal for a Bitcoin-based stablecoin called Satoshi Nakamoto Dollar (NUSD) seems to have not been developed further.
The goal of NUSD was to create a stablecoin that was independent of the US dollar and traditional banking systems. It aimed to bridge the gap between centralized finance and DeFi, eliminating the need for banking services.
At present, NUSD has not been officially launched, unlike the spacecraft that is actually sending Bitcoin to the Moon today.
