A British national has been sentenced to five years in prison for hacking into the Twitter accounts of prominent U.S. politicians and businessmen. The hacker, Joseph James O’Connor, also faced charges of stealing cryptocurrency and cyberstalking victims. O’Connor’s guilty plea followed his extradition from Spain in April. During the sentencing hearing, O’Connor expressed remorse for his actions and vowed to never break the law again. The judge took into consideration O’Connor’s age and autism when determining the sentence, ultimately settling on five years. O’Connor had also admitted to stealing over $794,000 from a crypto company through SIM-swapping and engaging in other malicious activities, such as “swatting” a teenager and making threats.
