Bluesky: Exploring the Publicly Accessible Decentralized Twitter Alternative

In brief

Bluesky is a decentralized social media framework that emerged from Twitter in 2019. The beta version of the Bluesky app was released in February 2023, offering algorithm and moderation transparency, as well as the ability to change the moderation and algorithm(s) used on your personal profile feed. Bluesky aims to revitalize social media as a trusted public square by creating a platform that is trustworthy, scalable, and portable.

Bluesky’s origins

Bluesky was initially funded by Twitter in 2019 with the goal of creating an open and decentralized social media standard. In 2021, Jay Graber took over as the head of Bluesky, and in 2022, it became an independent organization. The Bluesky app was announced in October 2022 and released in beta on the Apple App Store in February 2023.
