An Unknown Entity Exploits Telegram Game on New Ethereum Layer-2 Scaler
An unknown entity has taken advantage of a popular Telegram-based game that operates on Blast Network, a newly launched layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum (ETH). The team behind the game, Super Sushi Samurai (SSS), announced on social media platform X that token transfers have been paused due to an attacker exploiting a vulnerability. This allowed the exploiter to double their tokens by transferring their holdings to themselves.
According to CertiK, a security firm, the attack affected approximately $4.6 million worth of tokens. However, it has been revealed that this incident was actually a white hat rescue.
What is a White Hat Rescue?
A white hat rescue occurs when a hacker exploits a protocol to demonstrate that a project has vulnerabilities. In this case, SSS has already been in communication with the exploiter and is working towards the safe return of the funds. They plan to provide an update and post-mortem analysis of the situation.
Criticism Surrounding Blast Network
Blast Network, which recently launched its mainnet, has faced criticism from the crypto community. Polygon Labs developer relations engineer Jarrod Watts previously warned about the risks associated with the platform.
Watts expressed concerns about users trusting 3-5 strangers to stake their funds on Blast Network. He highlighted that there is no way for users to withdraw their funds unless these individuals decide to act responsibly in the future.
