The Birth of Scent of the Metaverse
A new fragrance called Scent of the Metaverse was recently launched at Harvey Nichols in London. What makes this perfume unique is that it was created by a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) in collaboration with Rook Perfumes. DAO members purchased an NFT “access ticket” that granted them a months-long educational experience about fragrance creation and allowed them to contribute to the development of the scent. As co-owners of the fragrance, they were involved in every aspect, including the formula, packaging, design, and cosmetic clearances.
Getting on the Shelves
Rook Perfumes leveraged its existing partnership with Harvey Nichols to make Scent of the Metaverse available in the store. Although the concept of the fragrance intrigued the department store, ultimately, it was the scent itself that captured their interest. The DAO had to approve its sale at Harvey Nichols, but founder Nadeem Crowe believed it was unlikely they would object. However, if they had, he would have respected their decision.
The Idea Takes Shape
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Nadeem Crowe and Melissa Gilmour came up with the idea for Scent of the Metaverse. Their goal was to invite a group of individuals interested in scent to collaborate on creating a fragrance that represents the metaverse. The process involved open discussions between DAO members, Crowe, and a graphic designer named Warren. Together, they explored different art forms and ideas related to the metaverse that could inspire the scent. Ideas were shared on an interactive whiteboard and voted on by DAO members.
Challenges and Decision-Making
One challenge they faced was updating DAO members on the scent’s progress due to regulations regarding flammable scent samples. To overcome this, Crowe acted as the final decision-maker based on the group’s contributions. Gilmour emphasized the importance of having a motivating force or leader within a DAO to bring people together and make decisions. Crowe acknowledged that not everyone in the group had to love the final scent but aimed to create a desirable and interesting product.
Using Web3 Technology with Integrity
Crowe criticized fragrance houses that try to capitalize on Web3 without truly embracing its underlying philosophy. He commended Gilmour for finding an innovative way to incorporate NFT technology with integrity. The Scent of the Metaverse itself is described as unusual, with notes of white smoke, warm circuitry, digital rose, and celestial incense. Crowe aimed to connect the worlds of holographic art and nature by adapting natural ingredients to have a more synthetic feel.
A Journey from Concept to Reality
Bringing Scent of the Metaverse from its inception as a concept of metaverse and digital art to a luxury retailer in Knightsbridge was not an easy journey. However, it is now a reality as the fragrance sits on the shelves of Harvey Nichols—a significant achievement for Crowe and his team at Rook Perfumes.
Hot Take: Scent of the Metaverse Transcends Boundaries
Scent of the Metaverse represents a groundbreaking collaboration between a DAO and a fragrance house. By involving DAO members in every aspect of creation, Rook Perfumes has created a unique scent that captures the essence of the metaverse. This innovative approach demonstrates the potential for decentralized production and ownership in various industries, including perfume. Scent of the Metaverse challenges traditional notions of fragrance development and invites individuals to explore new possibilities in scent creation. It serves as a reminder that innovation knows no boundaries and can lead to unexpected and exciting outcomes.
