Bitcoin Ordinals Bug Resolved by Creator Casey Rodarmor
Casey Rodarmor, the creator of Bitcoin Ordinals, a popular Bitcoin-based non-fungible token (NFT) collection, has successfully resolved a bug that was causing an error in the generation of Bitcoin inscription numbers. The bug was discovered and identified over the past weekend.
In December of last year, Rodarmor found a loophole in the latest version of Bitcoin, called “Taproot,” which allowed him to upload a black and white skull PNG image known as inscription 0. This marked the beginning of Bitcoin ordinals’ journey into the crypto market.
Bitcoin ordinals leverage the Satoshi ordinal theory to inscribe digital assets onto the Bitcoin network. Once inscribed, these assets cannot be edited or deleted, making them unique and permanent. Currently, there are 35 million ordinal inscriptions in the Bitcoin NFT ecosystem, with creators having spent over $63 million on creating ordinals.
Creating and Trading Bitcoin Ordinals
To create a Bitcoin ordinal, you can use inscription services like Gamma, Unisats, Magic Eden, or OrdinalsBot. After creating your first ordinal, you have the option to hold onto it, sell it, or list it for sale on marketplaces like Gamma, Ordswap, and MagicEden.
The Bitcoin Inscription Number Issue
Unfortunately, a problem arose over the weekend when two inscriptions (35321413 and 35329860) were indexed differently by different versions of ord (0.9.0 vs. 0.7.0 and 0.8.0). As a result, newer versions started assigning numbers that were off by two from older versions.
Casey Rodarmor has found a resolution for this issue, suggesting that users upgrade to ord 0.9.0 and use it as the source of truth going forward. The new version introduces a more robust inscription parser to handle edge cases that previous versions did not handle.
The Market Health of Bitcoin Ordinals
Bitcoin ordinals have gained popularity among crypto and NFT collectors since their introduction. In the first half of 2023, they surpassed Solana NFTs to become the second most popular NFT collection.

Recently, Bitcoin Ordinals collections have experienced a surge in activity after a period of relative quiet. In the past seven days alone, trading sales volume for Bitcoin ordinals reached $13 million. This week, Bitcoin ordinals are up 13.28% compared to the previous week.
