The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) Postpones Smart Contract Upgrade Due to Bug
The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) has decided to delay its scheduled smart contract upgrade after identifying a bug in the upgrade. The decision was made in consultation with contributors to the Stellar ecosystem.
Stellar to Disarm Validators After Reconsideration
The bug, which was found in Stellar Core v20.1.0 software, presented potential issues for applications and services using fee bumps in Soroban transactions. Specifically, it affected the refund process by sending the refund back to the wrong account. Initially, the SDF assessed the bug’s risk as low and intended to proceed with the upgrade. However, feedback from various stakeholders led to a reevaluation of the launch schedule and ultimately resulted in the decision to postpone.
Next Steps for Protocol 20
The decision on whether to proceed with the upgrade now rests with other validators in the network. They can either vote for Protocol 20, enabling the upgrade if a quorum is reached, or choose to maintain Protocol 19 by disarming. The SDF is actively working on resolving the bug and plans to coordinate a future vote date once a bug fix is released within two weeks.
Hot Take: Stellar Values Trustworthiness over Complete Decentralization
StellarSKULL, a contributor to the Stellar ecosystem, commented on the situation, stating that delaying the upgrade shows that trustworthiness is more valuable than complete decentralization. This incident highlights the collaborative decision-making process of decentralized blockchain networks.
