A Candidate for Head of Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Agency Reveals Cryptocurrency Holdings

A candidate for the head of Ukraine’s National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP) has disclosed her ownership of various cryptocurrencies, according to an official declaration. Kateryna Kapliuk, a former journalist and current NACP candidate, revealed that she acquired over 30 altcoins during her time at the agency. The declaration shows that Kapliuk purchased multiple cryptocurrencies until mid-2022, with a total value of approximately $4,778.

While it is unclear whether Kapliuk still holds the mentioned cryptocurrencies, the declaration states that she acquired over 19.3 million SHIB tokens, more than 39.7 billion DOGE tokens, and a small amount of BTC in 2021 alone. These tokens were primarily held on Binance. As of now, Kapliuk has not made any public statements regarding her cryptocurrency holdings.

Seizure of Crypto Assets from Former Chief of Special Communications Service

In December 2023, it was reported that NACP had seized crypto assets worth $1.5 million from Yury Shchigol, the former chief of the Special Communications Service. Shchigol and his deputy Victor Zhor were accused of misappropriating around $1.8 million in government funds through an alleged scheme involving overpayment for software and services from two undisclosed companies. The seized assets included 6.9 BTC, $1.2 million in USDT, and 331 TRX. Zhor has also been arrested in connection with the case.

Hot Take: Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Agency Candidate’s Cryptocurrency Holdings Raise Questions

A candidate for the head of Ukraine’s anti-corruption agency revealing her ownership of various cryptocurrencies has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the transparency of the agency’s operations. The disclosure of over 30 altcoins, including significant amounts of SHIB and DOGE tokens, highlights the growing presence of cryptocurrencies in government circles. It remains to be seen whether these holdings have any influence on the candidate’s decision-making or if they have been divested since the declaration was made. This case underscores the need for robust regulations and ethical guidelines surrounding cryptocurrency ownership by public officials.
