CFTC Chair Rostin Behnam Predicts Binance’s Changpeng Zhao Faces Imprisonment

The Chair of the CFTC Believes Binance’s Former CEO Will Go to Prison

The Chair of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) predicts that Changpeng Zhao, the former CEO of Binance, will be sentenced to prison for his involvement in recent charges. In an interview with CNBC, CFTC Chair Rostin Behnam stated that he expects Zhao to spend time behind bars after pleading guilty to failing to implement sufficient anti-money laundering protocols at Binance, which is currently the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world.

Behnam emphasized that there are over $4 billion in fines from both criminal and civil cases involving the CFTC, Justice Department, and Treasury. He added that law enforcement agencies are working together to send a clear message by holding bad actors accountable.

A court filing revealed that the government argued Zhao posed a flight risk due to his citizenship in two other nations and substantial wealth outside the United States. However, Judge Richard A. Jones ruled that Zhao must remain in the US until his sentencing on February 24th next year.
