Circle Introduces Upgrade for USDC and EURC Stablecoins
Circle has launched a significant v2.2 upgrade for its USDC and EURC stablecoins, focusing on reducing transaction costs, enhancing security, and providing seamless integration for EVM blockchain transactions. This update, the first major one since early 2021, aims to improve the functionality and security of these stablecoins on EVM-compatible blockchains.
Key Improvements in the Upgrade
The v2.2 upgrade brings about reduced gas costs to make transactions more economical, especially for users who frequently perform transactions affected by high fees on the blockchain. Additionally, there’s enhanced support for account abstraction, simplifying user experiences with more flexible wallet structures. Security measures have also been bolstered through a comprehensive audit by blockchain security firm Halborn, ensuring the integrity of the upgrade.
Enhancements and Rollout Details
The v2.2 upgrade includes six new changes to smart contracts for USDC and EURC, implemented seamlessly across supported EVM blockchains. It is fully backwards-compatible with no disruptive changes, meaning developers and users won’t need to take any action to adapt. Other refinements include signature validations for smart contract wallets, streamlined blocklist checks, improved resilience against blockchain forks, and a one-time name change from ‘EUROC’ to streamline branding for EURC.
The rollout of the v2.2 upgrades began on Nov. 9 and is expected to be completed over the next few months.

Circle’s v2.2 upgrade represents a significant step towards enhancing stablecoin technology by prioritizing cost-efficiency, security, and user experience. These improvements demonstrate Circle’s commitment to innovation in digital currency infrastructure, paving the way for broader adoption of stablecoins in the crypto ecosystem.
