Venezuelan Security Forces Seize Bitcoin Mining Machines in Raid on Gang-Controlled Prison

Venezuelan security forces recently conducted a raid on Tocorón prison, which was controlled by a criminal gang, and confiscated Bitcoin mining machines. The operation also resulted in the seizure of weapons including grenades, rocket launchers, and guns. This marked the first time that authorities took action against the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, which had expanded its criminal activities to neighboring countries.

The gang members were involved in various illicit activities such as human trafficking, kidnappings, extortion, and prostitution. The prison itself had luxurious facilities like a baseball field, swimming pool, zoo, nightclub, and casino for the inmates. In addition to these amenities, there were Bitcoin mining machines being used for illegal mining operations.

During the raid, four guards were arrested on suspicion of aiding the gang members. Some inmates managed to escape while the remaining 1,600 were relocated to other prisons. Despite the temporary ban on Bitcoin mining operations in Venezuela since March due to a corruption investigation involving cryptocurrency wallets and Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), the country’s state-run oil company, Bloomberg reported that the ban was negatively impacting the crypto-mining industry.

Hot Take: Venezuelan Authorities Crack Down on Criminal Gang’s Bitcoin Mining Operations

Venezuelan security forces have taken decisive action against a criminal gang by raiding their headquarters at Tocorón prison. In addition to confiscating weapons such as grenades and guns, authorities also seized Bitcoin mining machines used for illegal mining activities. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to tackling organized crime and its association with cryptocurrency operations.

The luxurious facilities within the prison highlight how deeply entrenched criminal networks can become. However, this raid sends a clear message that no one is above the law. With the temporary ban on Bitcoin mining operations in Venezuela, it remains to be seen how this will impact the country’s crypto-mining industry. Nevertheless, this action sets a precedent for cracking down on illicit activities involving cryptocurrencies.
