Legal Chief of OneCoin Faces Prison Term

Irina Dilkinska, the former legal chief of OneCoin, has been sentenced to four years in prison by US District Judge Edgardo Ramos. Her conviction marks a significant development in the fight against the OneCoin scam, underscoring the legal system’s commitment to combat financial misconduct and safeguard market integrity.

How Irina Dilkinska Contributed to the OneCoin Scam?

  • Dilkinska pled guilty to her involvement in wire fraud and money laundering schemes.
  • The case, led by Damian Williams, US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, sheds light on the extensive fraud perpetrated by OneCoin.

Williams stated, “Irina Dilkinska’s role in the sprawling OneCoin pyramid scheme was a clear violation of ethical standards. Instead of upholding the law as Head of Legal and Compliance, she engaged in money laundering, aiding in the exploitation of millions of victims.”

OneCoin, founded in Sofia, Bulgaria, by Ruja Ignatova and Karl Sebastian Greenwood, operated as a pyramid scheme disguised as a cryptocurrency company, promising high returns on investment without authentic digital currency or blockchain technology.

The scheme’s success was fueled by its MLM model, enriching its founders through deceptive tactics. Dilkinska, responsible for overseeing OneCoin’s legal and compliance functions, played a key role in enabling the scheme’s financial misconduct, including facilitating the transfer of $110 million to a Cayman Islands entity.

As a result, she has been ordered to forfeit $111,440,000, reflecting her significant involvement in the fraud. The investigation into OneCoin, one of the largest cryptocurrency scams in history, continues to unravel the intricate web of deceit that ensnared over three million individuals worldwide, exploiting their desire for financial success similar to Bitcoin’s rise.

Furthermore, Dilkinska’s sentencing follows Greenwood’s 20-year imprisonment for orchestrating the OneCoin scam. While investors suffered severe financial losses, Greenwood lived a luxurious lifestyle funded by the fraud. The OneCoin saga also involves the disappearance of co-founder Ruja Ignatova, known as “the Cryptoqueen,” who has been evading charges of fraud and money laundering since 2017.

Speculation and investigation surrounding Ignatova’s whereabouts persist, with unconfirmed rumors suggesting her potential demise.
