Scammers Exploit Vitalik Buterin’s X Account in Phishing Attack
Fraudsters have gained control of Vitalik Buterin’s X account, previously known as Twitter, in an attempt to steal funds from unsuspecting victims. The scammers posted a message claiming to celebrate the arrival of Proto-Danksharding on Ethereum and offered free non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Buterin’s father, Dmitry Buterin, took to X to warn users about the hack and advised them to ignore the post. He also stated that Vitalik is working on regaining access to his account.
The fraudulent post directed victims to follow a link, connect their wallets, and claim the collectible. Ethereum developer Bok Khoo fell victim to the attack and lost assets. Crypto detective ZachXBT revealed that the scammers stole a total of $691,000.
Chinese crypto journalist Colin Wu suggested that the hacking of Buterin’s account may be linked to a group of hackers referred to as “Pink Drainer.”
