Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his desire to develop artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and prevent the West from monopolizing the technology. During a conference on AI, Putin stated that a new version of Russia’s national strategy for AI development would be approved through a presidential decree. The race for advanced AI technology has been compared to a nuclear arms race, with companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon competing. Shield AI, an American aerospace and defense technology company, is developing combat AI systems to save lives on the battlefield.
Shield AI’s Contributions to Battlefield AI
San Diego-based Shield AI, founded by Brandon Tseng, Ryan Tseng, and Andrew Reiter in 2015, is responsible for the Nova line of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) used by the US military in urban environments. The company aims to provide soldiers with insights into buildings before they enter using their Nova UAVs equipped with AI software known as “the hivemind.” Unlike human-guided UAVs, Shield AI’s AI-powered UAVs autonomously explore buildings and identify targets without human intervention. Shield AI has also partnered with defense contractor Kratos Defense to add an AI pilot to its unmanned XQ-58A fighter jet called the Valkyrie.
The US Military’s Investment in Battlefield AI

The Department of Defense unveiled the Replicator initiative, which aims to deploy attritable autonomous systems on a large scale within the next 18 to 24 months.
