Is the Solana Saga in Danger? A Microwaved Smartphone Becomes an NFT
Just 20,000 crypto-friendly Android smartphones were made, but now there’s one less in the world. A Solana influencer, known as Bangerz, microwaved a smartphone as a stunt and shared the video on Twitter. To commemorate the act, she minted thousands of Solana-based NFTs.
The video showed the phone crackling and steaming while cooking. The screen bubbled off the hardware and a mysterious liquid dripped out. Bangerz confirmed that the device was damaged and no longer turning on.
Following the video, Bangerz offered 3,333 commemorative Solana NFTs inspired by it for free minting via 3.land. The move garnered attention from Solana users on Twitter.
The Rise and Fall of Saga Microwave NFTs
The Saga Microwave NFTs quickly sold out and were being flipped on secondary marketplaces. They initially sold for about $25 worth of Solana but have since fallen sharply to around 0.045 SOL (just over $4) on Tensor. So far, these NFTs have generated approximately $33,000 worth of trading.
3.land is known for meme-inspired NFT drops on Solana, including collectibles inspired by negative appraisals such as the “Saga: Bust of the Year” influenced by popular YouTube tech reviewer Marques “MKBHD” Brownlee.
Bangerz was contacted for comment but did not respond.
Solana Labs Announces “Chapter 2”
Solana Labs revealed plans to release a follow-up phone to the Saga called “Chapter 2.” The pre-orders for this new phone are priced at $450, which is less than half of the original Saga’s retail price. Within the first 30 hours of availability, 30,000 phones were ordered.
Hot Take: A Microwaved Smartphone Turned NFT
The Solana Saga took an unexpected turn when an influencer decided to microwave one of the limited-edition smartphones. This act generated buzz on social media and led to the creation of commemorative NFTs based on the video. While the initial hype drove up prices, the value of these NFTs has since declined. This incident highlights the growing popularity of meme-inspired NFT drops and the unique ways in which influencers engage with crypto communities. As Solana Labs prepares to release a new phone, it remains to be seen if similar stunts will continue to capture attention in the future.
