Deployment of Dencun Upgrade on Holesky Testnet by Ethereum Developers

Ethereum Implements Dencun Upgrade on Holesky Testnet

Ethereum core developers have successfully executed the Dencun upgrade on the Holesky testnet, marking the final testnet upgrade before the anticipated mainnet deployment in the coming month. The upgrade was forked on the Holesky testnet and finalized shortly after. This follows the phased approach of deploying Dencun on the Goerli and Sepolia testnets in January. The Ethereum All Core Developers call is expected to set a date for the mainnet deployment of Dencun, which is likely to take place in early to mid-March.

Introducing Proto-danksharding

Dencun incorporates the Cancun and Deneb upgrades, with a major feature called Proto-danksharding (EIP-4844). This feature introduces “blobs,” which enable Ethereum nodes to temporarily store and access large amounts of off-chain data, reducing storage demands. It aims to lower transaction costs for Ethereum dapps, particularly benefiting Layer 2 rollup chains by enabling more cost-effective and scalable data processing.

Ethereum’s Last Major Upgrade: Shapella

In March 2023, Ethereum underwent its last major upgrade called Shapella. This upgrade allowed users and validators to withdraw their staked ether on the network for the first time.

Ethereum is one step closer to its mainnet deployment of the Dencun upgrade after successfully implementing it on the Holesky testnet. With Proto-danksharding as a key feature, this upgrade will significantly improve off-chain data storage and access, leading to reduced transaction costs for Ethereum dapps. The upcoming Ethereum All Core Developers call is expected to determine the date for the mainnet deployment, which is anticipated to take place in early to mid-March. This marks another milestone in Ethereum’s continuous efforts to enhance scalability and efficiency on its blockchain.
