EVM Rollups and Sidechain Projects
Buterin mentioned that Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) rollups, pioneered by projects like Arbitrum, Optimism, Scroll, Kakarot, and Taiko, have significantly improved the security of their solutions. Additionally, “sidechain projects” like Polygon have also developed their own rollup solutions. Other important players in the space include “almost-EVMs” like zkSync, extensions like Arbitrum Stylus, and zero-knowledge proof pioneers Starknet.

Buterin noted a trend of layer-2 projects becoming more heterogeneous. Some independent layer 1 projects are looking to align themselves with the Ethereum ecosystem and potentially become layer 2 solutions. EIP-4844 and Data Availability
Ethereum’s upcoming hard fork will introduce EIP-4844, also known as “proto-dank sharding,” which will significantly increase data availability on the network. Buterin also emphasized that advancements in data compression technology enable greater functionality.
