A beauty salon in Yekaterinburg, Russia has made history by becoming one of the first businesses in the country to accept payment in digital rubles. According to DeloBank, a part of the Sinara financial and industrial group, a customer recently paid for a service at the salon using digital rubles through the Sinara app. The salon owner received the payment instantly in her Delobank-provided digital RUB wallet. This milestone has made the salon the first of its kind in Russia to test the digital ruble. The salon operator, Olga, described the new payment method as intuitive and instantaneous.
Russian Banks Working on Offline Wallets for CBDC
Russian banks, like China, are also facing connectivity issues in rural areas. As a result, the central bank digital currency (CBDC) being developed in Russia must include offline options in the form of “hard” wallets. Although Chinese banks have already introduced mobile, smartcard, and wearable CBDC “hard” wallets, Russian banks are still in the process of creating their first offline wallets. The CBDC in Russia aims to provide customers with new ways to interact with companies and ensure that the digital ruble, alongside cash, becomes a widely accepted and convenient payment method.
