The Trial of Sam Bankman-Fried and Other Key Players
The trial of Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO and co-founder of FTX, is set to begin next week in New York’s Southern District. Bankman-Fried will face seven criminal charges related to the collapse of his company, which was described as one of the most abrupt and difficult collapses in corporate America’s history.
Bankman-Fried, also known as SBF, studied at MIT and worked at Jane Street before launching FTX and Alameda Research. Despite becoming one of the world’s youngest billionaires at 29, he claimed to subscribe to the philosophy of effective altruism and aimed to use his wealth for good causes.
After FTX went bankrupt in November 2021, Bankman-Fried apologized for the loss of money in several interviews with mainstream media. He was later arrested in the Bahamas and faced criminal charges, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Barbara Fried and Joseph Bankman
SBF’s mother, Barbara Fried, retired from her position as a professor at Stanford Law School last year. She denied that her departure had anything to do with her son’s crypto empire’s collapse. Before teaching, Fried worked as an associate at a New York City law firm and served as a law clerk.
SBF’s father Joseph Bankman, also a retired law professor at Stanford, is a tax expert who worked on making the U.S. tax code more favorable for lower-income citizens. He is also a clinical psychologist who has testified before Congress.
Both parents are involved in the trial because they are alleged to have used their influential roles within FTX for personal gain by channeling millions of dollars to various entities, family members, and friends.
Gabriel Bankman-Fried
SBF’s brother Gabriel is also involved in the trial. He ran a pandemic-prevention group that received funding from FTX, and authorities are now investigating whether he misappropriated funds. Gabriel allegedly expressed interest in purchasing a sovereign nation for constructing a shelter for a catastrophic event.
John J. Ray III
John J. Ray III, the newly appointed CEO of FTX, oversaw the liquidation of Enron and is now responsible for restructuring the collapsed crypto firm. He attributed FTX’s collapse to a small group of inexperienced individuals and described it as an utter failure of corporate controls.
Judge Lewis Kaplan
Judge Lewis Kaplan will preside over the trial of Sam Bankman-Fried and other key players.
