Ethereum’s Sepolia Testnet Implements Live Dencun Upgrade

ETH’s Latest Upgrade Dencun Goes Live on Sepolia Test Network

ETH’s latest major upgrade, Dencun, has been deployed on the Sepolia test network, marking an important milestone before the implementation of its “proto-danksharding” feature. The deployment on Sepolia was finalized soon after it commenced, with DevOps engineer Parithosh Jayanthi confirming that “blobs are now flowing in Sepolia.” This successful testnet deployment follows the previous initiation of the upgrade on the Goerli testnet. The Ethereum team is now preparing for the final testnet deployment on Holesky, scheduled for Feb. 7. Once this is complete, a mainnet launch date for Dencun will be established.

Dencun’s Proto-Danksharding Feature and its Benefits

One of the highly anticipated features of Dencun is its proto-danksharding functionality, which aims to enhance scalability and reduce gas fees by introducing a compressed data storage mechanism called “blobs.” These blobs are large in size and can significantly reduce costs compared to similar amounts of calldata. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin explained that a blob-carrying transaction includes an extra piece of data known as a blob. This major upgrade follows Ethereum’s previous Shapella upgrade in March 2023.
