Optimism Launches Third Round of Airdrops
Airdrops are a great way for crypto projects to engage users and potentially bring them life-changing wealth. Optimism, however, has taken it a step further by using airdrops to maintain long-term engagement. Following successful airdrops in March and May 2022, the Optimism Foundation has announced its third round of airdrops for active OP mainnet users.
What You Need to Know About the Third Airdrop
The third round of OP airdrops was announced by the Optimism Foundation on September 18. The airdrop will distribute 19 million OP tokens (worth approximately $26.22 million) to 31,000 wallets. Similar to the previous airdrop, this one aims to reward community members for participating in governance.
Eligibility for the Airdrop
To qualify for Optimism’s third airdrop, you must have delegated OP tokens for at least seven days between January 20 and July 20. Additionally, the number of OP tokens you hold multiplied by the number of delegated days must exceed 18,000 units. User rewards were calculated based on this criteria and multiplied by about 0.0018. Users who delegated to an address that voted at least once on-chain received double rewards. However, there is a reward cap of 10,000 OP per wallet.
Protecting Against Scammers
Scammers often target airdrops due to the excitement surrounding them. Phishing scams are common tactics used by scammers to trick users into connecting their wallets to malicious websites. To minimize the risk of falling for these scams, Optimism eliminates the claim process and sends rewards directly to users without any action required on their part. The team warns users not to interact with any site asking them to claim the airdrop.
Future Airdrops and OP’s Price
Even if you missed the third airdrop, there is still hope. Optimism has allocated 19% of the OP supply (approximately 816 million OP) for airdrops. The first airdrop distributed 5% of the supply to users, while the second airdrop distributed over 11.7 million OP tokens. With the latest airdrop of 19 million tokens, there are still at least 570 million OP tokens available for future airdrops.
Despite being seen as selling events, OP’s price has remained relatively stable. It is currently trading at $1.39, representing a 0.01% gain over the past 24 hours according to CoinMarketCap.
Hot Take: Optimism’s Airdrop Strategy
Optimism has become one of the leading Ethereum scaling solutions, attracting projects like Coinbase’s Base. Their airdrop strategy aims to incentivize active participation on their network for the long term, ensuring continued engagement and growth.
