The Sentencing of Key Individuals in the AirBit Club Ponzi Scheme
The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York is currently in the process of sentencing key individuals involved in the cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme known as AirBit Club. On October 3, the office of the U.S. attorney for New York announced the sentencing of three out of the five surviving defendants in the case: Scott Hughes, Cecilia Millan, and Karina Chairez. These individuals had previously pleaded guilty to money laundering and other charges earlier in 2023.
Scott Hughes, an attorney who was responsible for laundering approximately $18 million in AirBit Club fraud proceeds, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. Cecilia Millan, a senior-level promoter of AirBit Club, has received a five-year prison sentence. Karina Chairez, another senior-level promoter, has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison.
In addition to their prison sentences, Hughes has also been sentenced to three years of supervised release, while Millan and Chairez will serve three years and three months of supervised release, respectively.
The AirBit Club Ponzi Scheme
The AirBit Club scheme was launched in late 2015 as a “multi-level marketing club” within the cryptocurrency industry. The defendants used persuasive presentations to deceive investors into believing that AirBit Club would provide daily returns from crypto mining and trading. However, instead of using investors’ funds for these operations, $100 million went into the pockets of the founders and promoters.
Despite some early complaints about withdrawal delays and hidden fees in 2016, the AirBit Club scheme managed to continue its fraudulent activities until 2020.

U.S. attorney Damian Williams emphasized that Hughes, Millan, and Chairez all played crucial roles in perpetuating the AirBit Club pyramid scheme. Williams stated, “Today’s sentences send a message that anyone who facilitates cryptocurrency investment schemes – not just those at the top – will face serious consequences for such crimes.”
Upcoming Sentencing and Conclusion
In September 2023, AirBit Club co-founder Pablo Rodriguez was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Another co-founder, Dos Santos, who has pleaded guilty to various charges, including wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering, is scheduled to be sentenced on October 4, 2023. Santos will be the last defendant to be sentenced out of the six individuals involved in the AirBit Club scheme.
