A Failed Funding Proposal Leads to Suspension of PolkaWorld Operations
The Polkadot community known as PolkaWorld, with over 50,000 members, has been forced to suspend its operations due to a rejected funding proposal. The proposal requested 16,842 DOT tokens (worth nearly $70,000) to cover operational costs for the last quarter of 2023 and promote the Polkadot ecosystem in Asia. Unfortunately, the proposal was overwhelmingly rejected with 93.3% of the votes cast as “nay.”
PolkaWorld attributes the suspension to the implementation of the new open governance structure called “OpenGov” on Polkadot. This change grants every token holder a vote in decision-making processes. While PolkaWorld takes an optimistic view of this new framework, they believe that decentralization only works for the informed and suggest reinstating some aspects of the previous council system.
Another project, Brushfam, has also announced its departure from Polkadot due to concerns with OpenGov and other issues such as financing difficulties and a lack of business strategy.

Hot Take: Rejected Funding Proposal Reveals Challenges in Polkadot’s Governance
The rejection of PolkaWorld’s funding proposal sheds light on the challenges faced by the Polkadot community under the new open governance structure. While decentralization is an important principle, it is crucial to ensure that all members are informed and have a say in decision-making processes. The incident highlights the need for a balance between decentralization and expertise-based evaluation. As Polkadot moves forward, it may need to reconsider aspects of its governance model to address concerns raised by its community members.
