FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried Faces Trial: Key Testimony from Three Witnesses Anticipated

The Trial of Sam Bankman-Fried: Testimonies from Former Colleagues and Friends

The founder of the now-defunct crypto exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried, is set to go on trial today, almost a year after the exchange filed for bankruptcy. The trial is expected to last around six weeks and will feature testimonies from some of Bankman-Fried’s former colleagues and friends.

Caroline Ellison, Bankman-Fried’s Former Girlfriend

Caroline Ellison, who was both Bankman-Fried’s former friend and colleague, as well as his ex-girlfriend, is one of the most highly-anticipated witnesses in this case. As the former head of Alameda, FTX’s crypto hedge fund, she is believed to have inside knowledge of what occurred behind closed doors at FTX. Following her arrest and admission to misleading lenders, Ellison pleaded guilty to fraud charges and agreed to testify against Bankman-Fried.

Nishad Singh

Nishad Singh, an early hire at Alameda who knew Bankman-Fried from high school, will also testify. Singh served as a director of engineering at Alameda and later became the head of engineering at FTX. CoinDesk reports that Singh was one of three key holders of FTX’s matching engine, giving him the ability to move funds at will. He pleaded guilty to charges in February.

Gary Wang, Bankman-Fried’s Right-Hand Man

Gary Wang, a co-founder of Alameda Research and FTX, played a crucial role as Bankman-Fried’s right-hand man. He held the position of CTO at both companies and is considered a critical player at FTX. Wang and Bankman-Fried have been acquainted since attending high school together and even shared a dorm at MIT. Wang pleaded guilty shortly after his arrest in December 2022.

In addition to these witnesses, the defense will call upon several others, including corporate consultant Thomas Bishop, data analytics and forensics expert Brian Kim, financial consultant Joseph Pimbley, and finance and technology professor Andrew Di Wu from the University of Michigan.
