Google to Release Conversational AI System Gemini, Competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT
Google is preparing to launch its highly anticipated conversational AI system called Gemini, which will enter into a fierce battle with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to a report by The Information, Google has started testing Gemini with select companies, suggesting that its official release may be imminent. Gemini is a multimodal language model (LLM) that can process various types of inputs such as text, image, and audio.
During the Google i/o keynote in May, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that Gemini was specifically designed to be multimodal and already exhibits impressive capabilities not seen in previous models. This puts Google in direct competition with OpenAI’s popular chatbot ChatGPT, which has gained significant attention for its conversational abilities across industries like finance and healthcare.
When asked about the timing of Google’s entry into the chatbot market, Pichai expressed confidence in the progress made so far and emphasized the importance of refining their models before launching. While Google’s initial attempt at a chatbot called Bard faced criticism for providing inaccurate information about the James Webb telescope, it has since been upgraded using Google’s new multimodal model PaLM 2.
A comparison conducted by Decrypt demonstrated that the improved Bard performed favorably against ChatGPT Plus in certain areas, offering faster translations and better code generation support for over 20 programming languages. Additionally, Bard benefited from integration with Google’s real-time search index for answering current event questions. Google’s investment in Anthropic, the startup behind Claude AI (ChatGPT’s competitor), further strengthens its position in the AI space.
Google’s Ecosystem Approach to AI
In addition to Gemini and Bard, Google is taking an “ecosystem approach” by integrating generative capabilities across its products like Docs, Maps, and Search. The company recently announced new AI upgrades aimed at enhancing information discovery and consumption online.
Hot Take: Google’s Gemini Takes on OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the Battle of AI Chatbots
With the upcoming release of Gemini, Google is poised to challenge OpenAI’s dominance in the conversational AI space. Gemini’s multimodal capabilities and Bard’s integration with Google’s search index give Google a competitive edge. However, OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains a formidable opponent with features like advanced data analytics and support for large amounts of context through Claude AI. As Google continues to invest in its “AI-first future,” it is clear that the battle for AI supremacy is heating up.
