In April, a TikTok user known as Ghostwriter caused a global uproar by releasing an AI-generated collaboration between Drake and The Weeknd. Now, they are attempting to take these robot-crafted tracks all the way to the Grammys. Ghostwriter recently submitted their fabricated hit, “Heart on My Sleeve,” for Grammy Awards consideration in the categories of Best Rap Song and Song of the Year. Despite legal threats, the song’s creator is eligible for the music industry’s top honor since they wrote the lyrics, even though the vocal styles mimic those of Drake and The Weeknd without their consent.
The CEO of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr., supports the decision to allow AI-assisted songs to be eligible for awards. However, the Academy will not give an award to AI-generated material. Ghostwriter’s fake Drake/Weeknd song is eligible for consideration due to its human-originated lyrics. This week, Ghostwriter released another AI-assisted track, “Whiplash,” imagining a collaboration between Travis Scott and 21 Savage. They implored the rappers to allow the track to be widely released in exchange for royalties.
Ghostwriter’s refusal to back down in the face of ethical and legal concerns reflects the recording industry’s belief that AI must be adapted to rather than combated.
